About the Tamil University

The Tamil University, an Unitary type was established at Thanjavur, on 15th September 1981. The very aim of the University is to promote research on the various aspects of Tamil language, History, Art, Culture and Science. In 1992, research degrees viz. M.Phil. and Ph.D. were introduced.After 2001, in order to serve the requirements of the students hailing from rural as well as urban areas, the University started PG Degree courses and a few specialized diploma and certificate courses. The University also aims to utilize the Tamil language as an effective medium for offering the course of Science and Technology. The thrust areas of research or associated with the field of arts, culture, music, dance, drama, sculpture, architecture, literature, linguistics, history, epigraphy, archaeology, philosophy, geography, soil sciences, astronomy, navigation and shipping astrology, siddha medicine, environment and herbal science, engineering sciences and handicrafts. The university has 26 academic departments and four research centres / projects with a library, and a museum.The University has a vast campus covering about 824.0 acres and has an Herbal Garden.

ABOUT the department

The department of Environmental and HerbalScience was established in 2006 with the objective of imparting environmental educationon local, regional and global environmental scenarios. The department offers M.Sc.(Environmental Science), M.Phil. (Environmental Science) and Ph.D.(Environmental and Herbal Sciences). Thecurriculum for academic programmes focuseson all important aspects of Environmental andHerbal Science, covering contemporaryproblems of conservation of herbal plants andenvironmental quality. In order to bring up thestudents with the awareness and the abilities toutilize the latest technologies of EnvironmentScience, we introduce interdisciplinary paperson computer applications and mitigationstrategies for disasters in our M.Sc. program.Our reputation attracts the students of otherInstitutes to come forward to do have internshipin our department and labs. Keeping in view thedepartment gives emphasis in teaching andresearch on conservation of natural resourcesand control of environmental issues of TamilNadu
